12 Days Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour Overview
What Is the 12-Day Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour?
The 12-Day Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour is an epic Himalayan motorcycle adventure through one of Nepal’s most remote, culturally rich, and spectacular regions. Designed for experienced riders and adventure enthusiasts, the journey combines challenging off-road riding, ancient Himalayan villages, Tibetan-influenced culture, dramatic mountain landscapes, and high-altitude roads.
Where Does the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour Go?
The journey begins in Kathmandu and continues through Pokhara, Tatopani, Kagbeni, Lo Manthang, Chosar, Kora La, Muktinath, and back to Kathmandu. The route follows the spectacular Kali Gandaki Valley before entering the restricted Upper Mustang region, where the landscape changes dramatically from green mountain valleys to dry, rugged Trans-Himalayan terrain.
What Makes Upper Mustang Special?
Upper Mustang is famous for its ancient settlements, Buddhist monasteries, colorful cliffs, traditional mud-brick houses, caves, and strong Tibetan cultural influence. The historic walled city of Lo Manthang is one of the major highlights, offering riders an opportunity to experience the unique architecture, traditions, and remote lifestyle of the Mustang region.
What Is the Kora La Motorcycle Ride Like?
One of the most exciting parts of the journey is the ride from Lo Manthang toward Chosar and Kora La, reaching approximately 4,600 m / 15,092 ft. Riders experience dramatic high-altitude desert landscapes, ancient cliffside caves, and remote Himalayan terrain. Access to Kora La can depend on current road conditions, weather, local regulations, and border-area restrictions.
What Happens Before the Motorcycle Journey?
The tour includes a dedicated motorcycle preparation and safety day in Kathmandu. Riders receive a route briefing, motorcycle inspection, equipment check, safety orientation, and a short test ride to become familiar with their motorcycles before starting the long Himalayan journey.
Is the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour Difficult?
The Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour is considered challenging and is best suited to riders with previous motorcycle and preferably off-road riding experience. Travelers should be comfortable riding gravel, dirt, rocky mountain roads, uneven surfaces, and steep sections. The route also reaches high elevations, so riders should be prepared for changing weather and altitude.
What Permits Are Required for Upper Mustang?
Upper Mustang is a restricted area, so special permits are required before entering the region. The tour includes assistance with the necessary permit arrangements. For official information about current restricted-area requirements, you can refer to the Department of Immigration Nepal and the Nepal Tourism Board.

Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour – Trip Information
Tour Duration and Difficulty
The 12-Day Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour is a challenging Himalayan motorcycle adventure designed to give riders enough time to experience the major landscapes and cultural highlights of Mustang without rushing the journey. The itinerary includes arrival in Kathmandu, motorcycle preparation and a test ride, the ride from Kathmandu to Pokhara, the journey through Lower and Upper Mustang, the Kora La excursion, Muktinath, and the return to Kathmandu. The tour is rated challenging because of long riding days, high altitude, rough roads, gravel, loose stones, steep sections, and changing Himalayan weather. Previous motorcycle and preferably off-road riding experience is strongly recommended.
Maximum Altitude and Riding Conditions
The highest point of the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour is Kora La at approximately 4,600 m / 15,092 ft. The journey also reaches Lo Manthang at approximately 3,840 m / 12,598 ft and Muktinath at around 3,800 m / 12,467 ft. Riding conditions change significantly throughout the route, from paved highways around Kathmandu and Pokhara to gravel roads, dirt tracks, rocky surfaces, uneven trails, and challenging off-road sections in Upper Mustang. Weather, road construction, landslides, river crossings, dust, and loose stones can affect travel time and route conditions.
Motorcycle, Preparation and Riding Experience
The tour uses reliable adventure motorcycles suitable for Himalayan terrain, such as Royal Enfield or a comparable model depending on availability and the final arrangement. Before the journey begins, our team checks the motorcycle’s tires, brakes, chain, lights, controls, and other essential components. Day 02 is dedicated to motorcycle preparation, safety briefing, equipment checking, and a short Kathmandu test ride, allowing riders to become familiar with their motorcycle before heading into the remote mountains. Riders must have a valid motorcycle driving license and should be confident riding on gravel, dirt, rocky surfaces, steep climbs, and descents.
Riding Distance and Daily Riding Hours
The tour involves substantial motorcycle riding between Kathmandu, Pokhara, Tatopani, Kagbeni, Lo Manthang, Chosar, Kora La, Muktinath, and back to Kathmandu. Most riding days require approximately 5–8 hours of riding, although the actual duration depends on road conditions, weather, traffic, sightseeing, photography stops, fuel breaks, and the pace of the group. Because Upper Mustang roads are remote and technically demanding, average riding speeds are considerably lower than on Nepal’s major highways.
Permits and Restricted Area Requirements
Upper Mustang is a restricted area of Nepal, so travelers must obtain the applicable permits before entering the region. The tour requires the Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit and the relevant Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). Best Trek & Adventure assists with the required documentation and permit arrangements as part of the organized tour. Current permit requirements and fees should always be confirmed before departure through the Department of Immigration Nepal. The Nepal Tourism Board is also a useful official source for general information about traveling in Nepal.
Best Time for the Tour
The most favorable seasons for the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour are generally March to May and September to November. Spring offers comfortable temperatures and good mountain visibility, while autumn generally provides stable weather and clear Himalayan views. Although Upper Mustang lies in a rain-shadow area, the roads leading through lower Mustang can still be affected by monsoon conditions during June to August. Winter brings very cold temperatures and potentially difficult conditions at higher elevations, so winter departures require additional planning and flexibility.
Food and Meals
The tour includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the journey. Kathmandu and Pokhara offer a wide selection of Nepalese and international cuisine, while food choices become simpler as you travel deeper into Mustang. Typical meals include dal bhat, noodles, momos, Tibetan bread, soups, rice, vegetables, eggs, pasta, and local dishes. Meals are generally served at hotels, lodges, and tea houses along the route. Travelers with vegetarian, vegan, or other dietary requirements should inform Best Trek & Adventure before departure so suitable arrangements can be made.
Accommodation
Accommodation includes hotels, lodges, and tea houses depending on the location. Kathmandu and Pokhara offer more comfortable hotel options, while accommodation in remote Mustang villages such as Kagbeni, Ghami, and Lo Manthang is generally simpler. Facilities can vary between properties, and services such as hot showers, heating, Wi-Fi, and charging may be limited in remote areas. The accommodation style is part of the authentic Himalayan travel experience.
Drinking Water
Safe drinking water is essential throughout the tour, especially at higher elevations. Filtered, treated, or bottled water is generally available along the route, but access becomes more limited in remote areas. Riders should carry a reusable water bottle or hydration bladder and avoid drinking directly from untreated streams or taps. Carrying water-purification tablets or a portable filtration system is also recommended.
Internet, Mobile Network and Connectivity
Internet and mobile connectivity become increasingly limited as the route moves deeper into Upper Mustang. Kathmandu and Pokhara generally have reliable connectivity, while remote Mustang villages may have weak or intermittent mobile signals. Wi-Fi may be available at some hotels and lodges but can be slow or unavailable, particularly in remote areas. Riders should download important maps, travel documents, and other information before leaving Kathmandu and should not depend on continuous internet access during the high-altitude sections.
Electricity and Charging
Electricity is available at many hotels and lodges, but power interruptions can occur in remote areas. Charging facilities may also be limited or subject to additional charges. We recommend carrying a power bank, charging cables, and suitable travel adapters so that phones, cameras, GPS devices, and other essential electronics can be used throughout the journey.
Fuel and Mechanical Support
Fuel stations become increasingly limited as you enter remote Mustang, so fuel planning is an important part of the tour. Our motorcycle team monitors fuel requirements and plans refueling stops before entering longer remote sections. Mechanical support is arranged according to the final tour package, while riders should also follow the guide’s instructions regarding fuel, motorcycle maintenance, and route conditions. Any support vehicle or dedicated mechanic should only be listed as included if it is part of your actual package.
Medical Facilities and Emergency Support
Medical facilities are limited in remote Upper Mustang compared with Kathmandu and Pokhara. Riders should carry essential personal medication and a basic first-aid kit. Our experienced local team monitors road, weather, and altitude conditions throughout the journey and coordinates appropriate assistance if an emergency occurs. Because evacuation options can depend on weather, road access, and location, comprehensive travel insurance with motorcycle activity, high-altitude travel, medical treatment, and emergency evacuation coverage is strongly recommended.
Money, ATMs and Personal Expenses
ATM and banking facilities are limited in remote Upper Mustang. We recommend carrying sufficient Nepalese rupees in cash before entering the restricted region. Kathmandu, Pokhara, and larger towns offer better access to ATMs and currency exchange services. Personal expenses such as snacks, additional drinks, charging, hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, tips, and other optional services should be budgeted separately.
Luggage and Packing
For motorcycle travel, packing light is strongly recommended. A waterproof soft bag or duffel bag is generally more practical than a large hard suitcase. Essential items include a valid passport and license, riding jacket, gloves, boots, helmet, waterproof layers, warm clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen, personal medication, reusable water bottle, power bank, and basic personal items. Important documents and electronic equipment should be protected from dust, moisture, and changing weather.
Group Size and Private Departure
The Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour can be arranged for private travelers, couples, families of suitable riding experience, or small motorcycle groups. Private departures provide greater flexibility with riding pace, rest stops, photography, and route arrangements. Group size and motorcycle availability can influence the final cost, so travelers should contact Best Trek & Adventure for current options and departure arrangements.
Responsible Travel in Upper Mustang
Upper Mustang has a distinctive cultural heritage and a fragile high-altitude environment. Travelers are encouraged to respect local traditions, monasteries, religious sites, communities, and the natural environment. Avoid littering, do not disturb cultural or archaeological sites, and follow your guide’s instructions when visiting monasteries, villages, caves, and restricted or border areas.

If you want to experience Mustang on foot rather than by motorcycle, our Upper Mustang Trek offers a different way to discover the region’s ancient villages, monasteries, caves, and landscapes. You can also explore our Annapurna Circuit Trek, which passes through Muktinath and the dramatic landscapes of the Annapurna and Mustang regions.
