Rara Lake Trek Overview
The Rara Lake Trek is one of the famous trails in the Mugu District at an elevation of 3000m. It lies amongst the most stunning and unique travelling journeys in Western Nepal. Rara Lake is one of Nepal’s holiest lakes. Many devotees visit the Rara Lake as their religious pilgrimage.
At almost 3000m, the Rara Lake is considered the largest and deepest lake in Nepal. The Lake is in Rara National Park and covers more than 10.8 sq. km of land. Since the Rara Lake journey is not as popular as the Annapurna or Everest trails, the trek is a typical tea house journey to the top.
The Rara Lake route often experiences relatively little traffic and crowds. You will therefore enjoy the journey if you enjoy trekking in solitude. The peaceful nature of the pathway will force trekkers to sit in many spots and let the free time pass by.
The Rara National Park is also a habitat for many endangered species including the Himalayan black bear and the red panda. You might also see much more wildlife such as ghorals, wild boar, thar, danphe, and musk deer while trekking on the trail.
It is also one of the untouched natural habitats in Western Nepal. A magical landscape of blue pine, oaks, firs, and Himalayan spruce surrounds the beautiful, serene Rara Lake. Trekkers will have lifetime memories from the trek in just a short span of 9 Days.
Rara Lake is a perfect trip for any time of the year. You can enjoy the beautiful snow-covered Rara Lake and the snowy mountains surrounding it during the winter. Also, you can enjoy a peaceful walk through the junipers and wildflowers covering the lake along with lush green forests in the spring and the summer.
The trek also provides a unique insight into the traditional ways of life of indigenous populations of the Mugu, including the Thakuri and other Tibetan-origin tribes. Even though the destination is distantly remote and a bit difficult to reach, the Rara Lake and the trekking experience are certainly worth the effort.
