Manaslu Circuit Trek with Tsum Valley Overview

Explore the Hidden Tsum Valley and Manaslu Region

The Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek is an unforgettable 22-day Himalayan adventure combining the remote Tsum Valley with the spectacular Manaslu Circuit Trek. Located in northern Nepal near the Nepal–Tibet border, the route takes you through secluded mountain villages, ancient monasteries, dramatic valleys, and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. The journey also takes you into the Manaslu Conservation Area, a protected region known for its rich biodiversity, traditional communities, and spectacular mountain scenery.

Discover the Remote Tsum Valley

Known as the “Hidden Valley,” Tsum Valley is one of Nepal’s most culturally fascinating trekking destinations. The valley remained relatively isolated for generations, helping preserve its unique Tibetan-influenced culture and traditional lifestyle. As you follow the trail through Lokpa, Chumling, Chhokang Paro, Nile, and Mu Gompa, you can experience peaceful mountain settlements and authentic Himalayan hospitality. If you are interested in exploring another culturally rich Himalayan route, our Langtang Valley Trek offers another excellent combination of mountain scenery and local culture.

Experience Tibetan Buddhist Culture

One of the major attractions of the Tsum Valley Trek is its strong connection with Tibetan Buddhism. Colorful prayer flags, mani walls, chortens, prayer wheels, and ancient monasteries appear throughout the trail. The spiritual atmosphere is particularly impressive around Mu Gompa, where trekkers can experience the peaceful religious traditions of the upper valley. The Manaslu region also shares strong cultural and historical connections with Tibet, with Buddhist monasteries, architecture, and traditions found throughout the area.

Traditional Villages and Himalayan Lifestyle

The trek passes through remote villages where traditional ways of life remain an important part of the local community. Stone houses, terraced farmland, livestock, monasteries, and traditional farming practices create a unique cultural experience. The relatively limited commercialization of the Manaslu region allows travelers to experience a more authentic side of rural Nepal. For travelers comparing different long-distance routes, our Annapurna Circuit Trek is another popular option offering diverse landscapes and traditional mountain communities.

Diverse Landscapes and Mountain Trails

The Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek offers remarkable geographical diversity. The trail begins through lower river valleys and terraced farmland before entering forests of pine, oak, rhododendron, and bamboo. As you gain altitude, the landscape gradually changes into alpine meadows, rocky valleys, glacial terrain, and barren high-altitude landscapes. The Manaslu Conservation Area itself contains a wide range of vegetation and wildlife, including numerous mammal and bird species.

Spectacular Views of Mount Manaslu

The trek provides impressive views of Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), the world’s eighth-highest mountain, along with Himalchuli, Ganesh Himal, Ngadi Chuli, Larkya Peak, and other surrounding peaks. As the trail moves deeper into the Manaslu region, the mountain scenery becomes increasingly dramatic.

Wildlife and Natural Beauty

Nature lovers will also find plenty to appreciate along the route. The Manaslu Conservation Area is home to diverse wildlife, including species such as the snow leopard, musk deer, and Himalayan tahr, as well as numerous bird species. The region also contains a wide variety of flowering plants and forest ecosystems, making the trek appealing to both mountain and wildlife enthusiasts.

Explore Mu Gompa and Upper Tsum Valley

The trail continues toward Mu Gompa at approximately 3,700 m / 12,139 ft, one of the most important cultural highlights of the Tsum Valley. Surrounded by dramatic Himalayan scenery, the monastery provides an opportunity to experience the spiritual atmosphere of this remote region. The surrounding villages and landscapes make this section particularly rewarding for travelers interested in photography, culture, and peaceful mountain environments.

Join the Manaslu Circuit

After exploring Tsum Valley, the route connects with the Manaslu Circuit, continuing through spectacular mountain settlements including Deng, Namrung, Samagaun, and Samdo. The trail follows the Budhi Gandaki Valley and gradually enters increasingly rugged alpine terrain. The classic Manaslu route follows an ancient trail with views of Manaslu and surrounding Himalayan peaks.

Acclimatization in Samagaun

Samagaun at approximately 3,530 m / 11,581 ft is an important acclimatization point before heading toward the higher sections of the Manaslu Circuit. Spending time here allows trekkers to adjust to the increasing altitude while exploring the surrounding mountain landscape. Proper acclimatization is particularly important before attempting the challenging Larkya La Pass.

Cross the Larkya La Pass

One of the biggest highlights of the trek is crossing Larkya La Pass at 5,160 m / 16,929 ft. This is one of the most demanding sections of the journey, involving a long day at high altitude. However, the spectacular views of snow-covered peaks and rugged Himalayan terrain make the effort worthwhile. Trekkers should have good physical preparation and follow a gradual pace during this section.

Descend to Bimthang and Complete the Circuit

After crossing Larkya La Pass, the trail descends toward Bimthang, where the landscape gradually becomes greener and more varied. The descent provides a welcome change after the challenging high-altitude section and offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys before continuing toward Dharapani and the end of the trekking route.

A Challenging and Rewarding Himalayan Adventure

The Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered a challenging trek because of its 22-day duration, remote terrain, steep ascents and descents, and high-altitude sections. Trekkers should be physically prepared for several hours of walking each day. Previous trekking experience is beneficial, but with proper preparation, acclimatization, and an experienced guide, determined trekkers can enjoy this remarkable journey.

Why Choose Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek?

This trek brings together remote Himalayan landscapes, Tibetan Buddhist culture, traditional villages, ancient monasteries, spectacular mountain views, diverse wildlife, and the challenging Larkya La Pass in one extended adventure. The combination of the secluded Tsum Valley and the classic Manaslu Circuit makes it an excellent choice for travelers looking beyond Nepal’s more crowded trekking routes.

Experience the Remote Himalayas of Nepal

From the peaceful villages of Tsum Valley to the dramatic landscapes surrounding Mount Manaslu, this journey offers a deeper experience of Nepal’s Himalayan culture and wilderness. The region’s natural and cultural importance is officially recognized through the Manaslu Conservation Area, which supports trekking, village experiences, and mountain activities. For travelers with enough time, good physical preparation, and a passion for less-traveled trails, the Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek is an exceptional way to experience the remote side of Nepal.

Venturing out from Mu Gompa, you will walk past stark, windswept high-altitude trails toward tiny, isolated border settlements. Many of the families living in these rugged pockets trace their roots back to generations of migrants who crossed over from Tibet in search of high pastures, refuge, and fertile grazing grounds.

Today’s trek is a longer and more adventurous journey as you climb deeper into the high alpine zone, ascending toward higher elevations past a series of culturally rich villages. Most settlements in this upper region are heavily influenced by Tibetan traditions, inhabited largely by communities whose ancestors migrated across the border generations ago.

Climbing steadily through fragrant pine and rhododendron forests, you will soon break out into the stunning open landscape of Shyala Village. From here, you are treated to breathtaking, unobstructed panoramic views of Phungi, towering Mount Manaslu, and Himal Chuli. Shyala is a rustic, high-altitude settlement where locals rely heavily on hardy crops like potatoes and barley, as well as yak herding, to survive the harsh environment.

Continuing your trek with the majestic peak of Ganesh Himal accompanying you along the horizon, you will descend slightly and cross a wooden bridge before arriving at your final destination for the day: Samagaun, one of the largest and most culturally vibrant main villages on the Manaslu Circuit.

Traveling at high altitudes brings the risk of altitude sickness, making a dedicated acclimatization day in Samagaun essential to help your body safely adjust to the thinning air. Today offers two fantastic hiking options depending on your energy levels and fitness:

  • Option 1: Hike to Pungyen Gompa (~5 to 6 hours round trip): This scenic trail leads you into a magnificent glacial valley beneath the east face of Mount Manaslu. The historic monastery is deeply sacred to local residents, who believe Lord Pungyan is the divine protector of the mountain.

  • Option 2: Hike to Manaslu Base Camp (~7 hours round trip): For a more challenging adventure, you can push higher toward the foot of the world’s eighth-highest mountain. Standing at Base Camp offers breathtaking, close-up panoramas of towering glaciers and surrounding giant peaks including Himalchuli, Shringi Himal, and Ganesh Himal.

After returning to Samagaun in the afternoon, you can rest, explore the local Tibetan-style alleys, and prepare for the higher elevations ahead.

After about 4 to 5 hours of scenic walking, you arrive at Samdo, a remote Tibetan refugee village situated just a few kilometers from the Tibetan border. The community here belongs primarily to the Bhotia ethnic group, practicing traditional Tibetan customs and Buddhism.

In the afternoon, you can rest or choose an optional short hike up toward the ridges above Samdo Village or toward the border trade route tracks, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks before returning to your teahouse for the evening.

Continuing onward, you will pass the seasonal trade hub of Larke Bazar—a historic marketplace where locals historically exchanged goods across the Tibetan border. Though often quiet today, it serves as a fascinating point of interest along the stark, rising valley. From here, the trail climbs steadily upward through barren, windswept terrain, keeping close alongside the glacier runoff and offering dramatic views of the looming Larkya Glacier. By early afternoon, you will arrive at Dharamsala (also known as Larkya Phedi), the high stone-built shelter that serves as the final staging ground before crossing the pass. Best Time for Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek

The best time for the Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons generally provide stable weather, clearer skies, comfortable daytime temperatures, and better trail conditions. The Nepal Tourism Board also lists March–May and September–November as the best seasons for the Manaslu Conservation Area.

Spring Season: March to May

Spring is one of the most beautiful periods for the trek. The weather is generally pleasant at lower elevations, while the higher sections remain cool. The forests become colorful with blooming rhododendrons and other Himalayan flowers, and clear mornings often provide excellent views of Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, and surrounding peaks. If you enjoy nature and photography, spring is an excellent time to combine this trek with other routes such as the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

Autumn Season: September to November

Autumn is considered one of the most reliable trekking seasons in Nepal. Following the monsoon, the atmosphere is generally clearer, mountain visibility is excellent, and trails are usually drier. The traditional villages, Buddhist monasteries, forests, and high mountain landscapes look particularly impressive during this period. This is also a popular season, so accommodation on the main Manaslu route can be busier than during the off-season.

Winter Season: December to February

Winter trekking is possible but considerably more challenging, especially in the higher sections of Tsum Valley and around Larkya La Pass at 5,160 m / 16,929 ft. Snowfall can cover trails, temperatures can fall well below freezing, and high passes may become difficult to cross. Trekkers considering winter should have suitable cold-weather equipment and be prepared for itinerary changes caused by snow and weather conditions.

Monsoon Season: June to August

The monsoon is generally the least favorable season for this trek. Heavy rainfall can make lower trails muddy and slippery and may increase the risk of landslides and swollen rivers. Mountain views can also be obscured by clouds. However, experienced trekkers who are comfortable with wet conditions may still travel during this period with appropriate equipment and flexible plans.

Which Season Should You Choose?

For the best combination of clear mountain views, comfortable temperatures, stable weather, and favorable trail conditions, we recommend March to May and September to November. Winter is more suitable for experienced trekkers, while monsoon trekking requires greater flexibility and preparation.

Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficulty

The Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek is a challenging high-altitude trek because of its long duration, remote trails, steep ascents and descents, and the crossing of Larkya La Pass at 5,160 m / 16,929 ft. The trek is considerably more demanding than shorter routes such as the Langtang Valley Trek because you spend many consecutive days walking in remote mountain terrain.

Long Trekking Days and Varied Terrain

Most trekking days involve around 5–8 hours of walking, although some sections can take longer depending on altitude, weather, and individual pace. The trail includes rocky paths, stone steps, steep climbs, suspension bridges, narrow sections, and long descents. The Tsum Valley section is particularly rewarding for travelers who enjoy quieter trails and traditional Himalayan villages.

High Altitude and Acclimatization

Altitude is one of the most important challenges of this trek. The route gradually climbs above 3,000 m / 9,842 ft before reaching the higher sections of the Manaslu Circuit. Proper acclimatization is essential, particularly before crossing Larkya La Pass. Walk at a steady pace, stay hydrated, eat adequately, and avoid ascending too quickly.

Larkya La Pass Challenge

The crossing of Larkya La Pass (5,160 m / 16,929 ft) is usually the most demanding day of the trek. The ascent begins early from Dharamsala/Larkya Phedi and involves prolonged walking at high altitude before descending toward Bimthang. Weather can change quickly at this elevation, so warm layers, gloves, a good waterproof jacket, trekking poles, and suitable footwear are important.

Is This Trek Suitable for Beginners?

The trek can be completed by fit and well-prepared beginners, but it is not the best choice for someone with no previous hiking experience. Its 20+ day duration and high-altitude sections require good endurance. If you are new to high-altitude trekking, preparing with regular hiking, stair climbing, long walks, and cardiovascular training several weeks or months before the trek is strongly recommended.

Physical Preparation

Before starting the trek, gradually increase your walking distance and include uphill and downhill training. Practicing with a backpack is also useful because you will be walking for several consecutive days. Good preparation is particularly important for the Tsum Valley section and the long crossing day over Larkya La.

Restricted Area Permits

An important planning point is that Tsum Valley and the Manaslu region are restricted trekking areas. The Nepal Tourism Board lists both Manaslu Circuit Trek and Tsum Valley Trek among routes where a licensed guide and agency-issued TIMS are required. The Department of Tourism also lists separate restricted-area permit requirements for the Manaslu area and Tsum Valley, so permits should be arranged through a registered trekking agency before starting the trek.

Conservation Area and Local Fees

The route passes through the Manaslu Conservation Area, which covers a large section of northern Gorkha and is known for its diverse wildlife, forests, traditional communities, and mountain landscapes. The Nepal Tourism Board highlights species such as snow leopard, musk deer, and Himalayan tahr, along with numerous bird species in the conservation area. You can also learn more about conservation efforts through the Manaslu Conservation Area Project.

Accommodation and Trail Facilities

Accommodation along the route is mainly provided by simple teahouses and lodges, particularly along the established Manaslu sections. Facilities become more basic in remote areas, so travelers should not expect the same level of comfort available in Kathmandu or Pokhara. The Nepal Tourism Board confirms that teahouses are available along the Manaslu trail, while camping is another option on some itineraries.

Overall Trek Difficulty

The Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek is challenging but highly rewarding. Its combination of remote villages, Tibetan Buddhist culture, ancient monasteries, diverse landscapes, spectacular mountain views, and the demanding Larkya La Pass makes it an excellent choice for experienced trekkers and well-prepared adventurers looking for a less-traveled Himalayan experience.
