Chepang People & Community Research Overview
Chepang Community Research
Central Nepal
The Chepang are an Indigenous community of Nepal traditionally associated with the hills of central Nepal, particularly in Chitwan, Makwanpur, Dhading and Gorkha. Their distinctive culture, traditional knowledge, rural livelihoods and relationship with the surrounding environment make their communities an interesting setting for cultural, social, anthropological and development-related research. A Chepang Community Research experience allows researchers to go beyond a conventional tourist visit and explore community life through field visits and local interaction. The journey is customized according to your research topic, objectives, preferred locations and available time.
What Can You Explore?
Chepang Culture & Traditional Life
Explore traditional Chepang lifestyles, customs, family and community practices, cultural traditions and the ways these are changing with education, migration, infrastructure and modernization.
Traditional Livelihoods & Agriculture
Research can explore agriculture, livestock, forest resources, food systems and traditional occupations. Traditional farming and the use of forest resources have played an important role in Chepang livelihoods.
Indigenous Knowledge & Environment
The relationship between Chepang communities and their natural environment provides opportunities to study traditional ecological knowledge, natural resources, local practices and changing relationships with forests and surrounding landscapes. Research has documented Chepang knowledge of wild and semi-domesticated plants used for food, medicine, cultural practices and income.
Community Life & Social Change
Researchers can explore community organization, education, healthcare, migration, gender roles, youth perspectives and other social changes affecting Chepang communities.
Tourism & Community Development
Depending on the research topic, fieldwork can examine tourism, homestays, local economic opportunities, infrastructure and the potential social and cultural impacts of tourism on Chepang communities.
Chepang Identity & Cultural Preservation
Research can examine how Chepang identity, language, traditions and cultural practices are maintained while communities experience modernization and wider social and economic changes.

Where Can You Conduct Research?
Research locations depend on your research topic, fieldwork requirements and available time. Possible areas include Chepang settlements in the hills of Chitwan, Makwanpur, Dhading and Gorkha, as well as other communities relevant to your research. There is no fixed day-by-day itinerary. We develop the travel plan around your research objectives, required field locations, available time, transportation requirements and preferred level of trekking. Depending on your project, the journey can include traditional villages, community homestays, agricultural areas, forest landscapes, local schools, cultural sites and communities away from major tourist routes.
