Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Overview

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek leads you to the lap of the third highest mountain in the world Mount Kanchenjunga (8,585m). The trekking route continues with the green meadows while crossing through many rivers, and forests filled with Rhododendrons, visiting many ancient and historical Monasteries, and small local villages with a welcoming environment.

Kanchenjunga lies in the eastern part of Nepal, where Sikkim lies on the east side and Nepal on the west side. Kanchenjunga was closed until the mid-1980s, but after that, this region was protected by the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and now requires a trekking permit.

With the help of this restriction, we can preserve the flora fauna, and wildlife of this region. In this trek, we can also witness other famous neighboring mountain peaks above (6,000m) like Yalung Kang (8,505m), Kambachen (7,903m), Janu (7,710m), Jongsong (7,483m), Kabru (7,353m), Tent Peak (7,365m), and Twins (7,350m).

Kanchenjunga Base Camp is famous not only for the majestic views of mountains on your way but also for its Freezing Glaciers. There are five major glaciers in this region. They are the Zumu, Talung, and Rathong glaciers flowing into the west side of Sikkim, whereas the Yalung and Kanchenjunga glaciers flow into the mighty Tamor River of Nepal.

This trek is going to be one of the longest trekking routes in Nepal where you will be trekking for almost 29 days.

Best time for the trek

The most suitable seasons for the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek will be autumn (mid-September to November) and spring (March to early June). If you plan to trek during these seasons you will be able to witness the best experience of Kanchenjunga Base Camp.

However, we would like you to suggest not going on a trek during the rainy and winter season because it creates more difficulties for the trekkers and the guides as well. The roads get slippery and during winter the roads get blocked for many days due to heavy snowfalls.

Landslides and floods are the main dangerous natural calamities that you might face during the rainy season. But when you trek during suitable and peak season the difficulties will get lesser and you will be able to experience the trek to the fullest. The days are warm and nights are a bit chilly which creates a suitable environment for trekking.

During this season the skies are mostly clear and the weather as well which will help you to witness the majestic views of mountains and mountain ranges.

Trek Difficulties

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek becomes challenging due to its altitude and the duration of the trek. Some of the trekkers might find it difficult to adapt to that level of altitude which is above (6000m).

Also, the duration of this trek is long as compared to other trekking trails. The physical condition of a trekker needs to be fit and healthy, whereas there are no proper health facilities during the trek at that level of altitude.

You will be trekking for 6 to 7 hrs a day for almost every day where at the end of the day you will be spending a night at a campsite in a tent. Some of the trekkers might not have experience on a tent and some might not be able to rest properly at that level of altitude.

These are the common difficulties that you might face during the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek.
