Travel Information and Useful Tips
Visa Requirements for Nepal

Travelers visiting Nepal generally need a tourist visa. Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) provides visa-on-arrival services for eligible nationalities, and travelers can also apply through a Nepali diplomatic mission before arrival. The current official tourist visa options include 15, 30, and 90 days, with fees of USD 30, USD 50, and USD 125 respectively. Requirements can vary by nationality, so check the Department of Immigration of Nepal before your trip.

Tibet Visa and Travel Permit

Tibet is an autonomous region of China, and foreign travelers need the appropriate Chinese visa and Tibet Travel Permit to enter the region. Tibet travel arrangements must generally be organized through an authorized travel agency, and additional permits may be required depending on the places included in your itinerary. Travelers should arrange the necessary documents well in advance because permit processing can affect the travel schedule. The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nepal provides official consular information for travelers in Nepal.

Passport and Documentation

Your passport should be valid for the required period and have sufficient blank pages for visas and immigration procedures. Before departure, keep copies of your passport, visa, Tibet Travel Permit, flight tickets, hotel confirmations, travel insurance, and emergency contact information. We recommend keeping both digital and printed copies in case the original documents are misplaced.

Immigration Procedures

You will complete immigration procedures when entering and leaving Nepal and when traveling to Tibet. At international departure points, travelers should have a valid passport and appropriate visa or travel documentation for their destination. Keep your passport, visa documents, and flight information easily accessible during airport transfers and immigration checks.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is highly recommended for the Nepal Tibet Tour. Your insurance should ideally cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation or interruption, baggage loss, flight delays, and other travel-related emergencies. Because parts of Tibet are located at high altitude, check whether your insurance provides suitable coverage for high-altitude travel.

Altitude and Acclimatization

Tibet is located at a significantly higher elevation than Kathmandu, with Lhasa at approximately 3,650 m / 11,975 ft. Allow your body time to adjust after arrival and avoid strenuous activities during the first day. Drink plenty of water, get adequate rest, and inform your guide immediately if you experience significant altitude-related symptoms.

If you are interested in exploring higher Himalayan destinations in Nepal, you can also see our Everest Region Trek for a more adventurous high-altitude experience.

Currency and Payments

Nepal uses the Nepalese Rupee (NPR), while Tibet uses the Chinese Yuan (CNY). Carry some local currency for small purchases, local markets, snacks, and personal expenses. Credit cards may be accepted at larger hotels and businesses, but availability can be limited in smaller establishments.

Clothing and Packing

Pack clothing suitable for changing temperatures and high-altitude conditions. Lightweight layers are useful in Kathmandu, while warm jackets, thermal clothing, gloves, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a warm hat are recommended for Tibet. A small daypack, reusable water bottle, personal medications, and basic toiletries are also useful.

Respect Local Culture

Both Nepal and Tibet have strong religious traditions. Dress respectfully when visiting temples, monasteries, stupas, and other religious sites. Follow local photography rules, avoid disturbing religious ceremonies, and follow instructions from your guide when visiting important cultural and religious landmarks.

You can learn more about Nepal’s cultural heritage through our Nepal Cultural Tours.

Flights and Weather Flexibility

This tour involves flights between Kathmandu and Lhasa, and Himalayan weather can sometimes affect flight schedules. We recommend keeping some flexibility in your travel plans and avoiding very tight connections with onward international flights. Your travel agency will provide updates if there are changes to the confirmed schedule.

Internet and Communication

Mobile networks and internet services can vary between destinations, particularly in Tibet and remote areas. Do not rely entirely on mobile data during the tour. It is useful to inform family members that connectivity may occasionally be limited and to keep important travel information available offline.

Food and Drinking Water

Hotels and restaurants generally provide a variety of meals, but food options may become more limited while traveling through remote areas. Drink bottled, filtered, or properly treated water and carry a reusable water bottle. Travelers with dietary restrictions should inform the tour operator in advance so suitable arrangements can be made.

Important Travel Note

Visa rules, Tibet permits, immigration procedures, flight schedules, and entry requirements can change according to government regulations and nationality. Travelers should confirm the latest requirements before departure. For Nepal, use the official Department of Immigration website rather than unofficial visa websites.

For travelers entering Tibet from Nepal, we recommend providing passport and travel details to Best Trek & Adventure well in advance so the necessary travel and permit arrangements can be coordinated according to the current regulations.

Best Time for the Nepal Tibet Tour
Spring and Autumn: The Best Seasons to Visit

The best time for the Nepal Tibet Tour is generally during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer relatively stable weather, clear skies, and good visibility, making them ideal for sightseeing, cultural exploration, and enjoying the spectacular Himalayan scenery.

Spring: March to May

Spring brings pleasant temperatures to Nepal, with blooming rhododendrons and other seasonal flowers adding color to the hills and valleys. The weather is generally comfortable for sightseeing and outdoor activities, while Tibet gradually becomes warmer after winter. Clear days also provide excellent opportunities to enjoy mountain views.

Autumn: September to November

Autumn is another excellent season for this tour, particularly in Nepal after the monsoon rains. The skies are generally clear, the air is fresh, and visibility is often excellent. This is also an important festival season in Nepal, making it a great time to experience local culture, traditions, temples, and celebrations.

Winter: December to February

Winter is possible for travelers who prefer quieter destinations and cooler conditions. Kathmandu can have pleasant daytime weather, although mornings and evenings can be cold. Tibet is considerably colder during winter, especially at night, so warm clothing and proper preparation are essential.

Monsoon: June to August

The monsoon season brings frequent rainfall to Nepal, which can result in cloudy skies, wet roads, and occasional travel disruptions. Tibet generally receives less rainfall, but weather conditions can still affect flights and travel plans. Travelers visiting during this period should allow some flexibility in their itinerary.

Weather and Travel Considerations

Since this tour combines Nepal and Tibet, weather conditions can vary significantly between the two destinations. Tibet’s high elevation means temperatures can be much colder than in Kathmandu, even during the warmer months. Regardless of the season, it is recomm

Spring and fall are the ideal seasons to come because of the great weather and excellent visibility for picturesque sights.

However, unless you intend to visit some of the severely restricted areas, there are no additional permissions required for the Nepal Tibet Tour.

You can plan a private vacation with two to four of your family members or friends if you want a more intimate experience. By choosing this option, you may avoid sharing your itinerary with others or going on a group trip.

Without a doubt, many Western visitors may find it difficult to use the restrooms in Tibet. It’s common to come across foul-smelling pit toilets when visiting outdoor locations.

For the most part, this Nepal and Tibet Cultural Journey is appropriate for everyone. However, a reasonable degree of fitness is advised.

Photographs are generally permitted in Tibet and Nepal but for some culturally, historically, and religiously sensitive heritages. In Nepal, for example, photography is frequently prohibited within temples such as the Patan Museum, Pashupatinath Temple, and certain parts of Boudhanath.

Avoid overexerting yourself by sprinting or jumping, and walk more slowly. Tell your guide if you feel uncomfortable, and they will help you.

It is advised that you purchase comprehensive travel insurance that includes coverage for high-altitude activities, medical emergencies, and trip cancellations.

During your Nepal-Tibet journey, you will require your passport and passport-sized pictures. For both the permission and the group visa, you must complete a single form.

Nepali is the most widely spoken language in Nepal. The primary language of Tibet is Tibetan, while English is also used in tourist destinations.
