Mardi Himal Trek 11 Days Overview

What Is Mardi Himal Trek?

The Mardi Himal Trek is a short and scenic Himalayan adventure in Nepal’s Annapurna region, offering spectacular views of Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. The trail passes through peaceful villages, rhododendron forests, alpine landscapes, and beautiful mountain ridges before reaching Mardi Himal Base Camp at around 4,500 m / 14,764 ft. It is an excellent choice for travelers looking for a rewarding Himalayan experience without committing to a long trek.

Where Is Mardi Himal Trek Located?

The Mardi Himal Trek is located in the Annapurna region of central Nepal, north of Pokhara. The trekking route usually begins around Kande or a nearby trailhead and gradually climbs through forests and mountain villages toward Forest Camp, Low Camp, High Camp, and Mardi Himal Base Camp. Its close proximity to Pokhara makes it one of the more accessible short treks in the Annapurna region.

How Long Does Mardi Himal Trek Take?

The trekking portion of the Mardi Himal Trek generally takes around 4–7 days, depending on the route, walking pace, acclimatization schedule, and starting point. A complete package from Kathmandu may take around 10–11 days when arrival, transportation, Pokhara, trekking, and return journeys are included. The relatively short trekking duration makes Mardi Himal ideal for travelers with limited time who still want to experience the Himalayan landscape.

What Is the Maximum Altitude of Mardi Himal Trek?

The highest point of the trek is Mardi Himal Base Camp, at approximately 4,500 m / 14,764 ft. The trail gradually gains elevation as it moves from the lower forests toward High Camp and the base camp. Although the trek does not require technical climbing, the increasing altitude and steep sections mean trekkers should maintain a steady pace, stay hydrated, and allow their bodies time to adjust.

Why Choose Mardi Himal Trek?

The Mardi Himal Trek is an excellent choice for travelers who want dramatic Himalayan scenery, peaceful trails, and a shorter trekking experience. One of its biggest attractions is the spectacular ridge walking above the tree line, where the landscape opens up to panoramic views of Machhapuchhre, Mardi Himal, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. Compared with some of Nepal’s more crowded trekking routes, Mardi Himal also offers a quieter and more intimate experience.

Mardi Himal Trek vs. Annapurna Base Camp Trek

The Mardi Himal Trek and Annapurna Base Camp Trek both take place in the Annapurna region, but they offer different experiences. Mardi Himal reaches a higher elevation of around 4,500 m / 14,764 ft and is known for ridge walking, open mountain panoramas, and a shorter route. Annapurna Base Camp reaches approximately 4,130 m / 13,550 ft and takes trekkers deeper into the Annapurna Sanctuary through valleys, villages, and diverse landscapes. If you prefer a shorter and quieter trek with panoramic ridge views, Mardi Himal is a great option; if you want a longer journey into a dramatic mountain amphitheater, Annapurna Base Camp may be more suitable.

Is Mardi Himal Trek Suitable for Beginners?

Yes, the Mardi Himal Trek is suitable for beginners with a reasonable level of fitness. Previous high-altitude trekking or technical climbing experience is not normally required. However, the trail includes several uphill sections, long walking days, and a challenging climb toward High Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp. Beginners should prepare with regular walking or hiking before the trek and follow their guide’s advice regarding pace, hydration, and altitude.

Major Attractions of Mardi Himal Trek

  • Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4,500 m / 14,764 ft with spectacular Himalayan views.
  • Panoramic views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Mardi Himal, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Annapurna ranges.
  • Scenic ridge-top trekking with wide-open mountain views above the forest line.
  • Trek through beautiful rhododendron, oak, and alpine forests.
  • Peaceful trails and a quieter atmosphere compared with some of Nepal’s more popular trekking routes.

  • Stunning sunrise and sunset views over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges from the higher viewpoints.
  • Explore the scenic route through Kande, Australian Camp, Forest Camp, Low Camp, and High Camp.
  • A short and rewarding Himalayan trek, ideal for travelers who have limited time in Nepal.
  • Suitable for beginners and first-time trekkers with reasonable fitness and proper preparation.
  • Convenient access from Pokhara, making it easy to combine the trek with a stay in the lakeside city.
  • A great alternative to the Annapurna Base Camp Trek for travelers seeking dramatic ridge views and a shorter trekking experience.

After breakfast at your hotel, begin a full-day sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Valley, a cultural hub renowned for its historic temples, stupas, palaces, and traditional Newari architecture. The Kathmandu Valley is home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, reflecting centuries of Hindu and Buddhist culture and architecture.

Your sightseeing tour can include the following major attractions:

Swayambhunath Stupa

Your first stop is Swayambhunath, one of Kathmandu’s most iconic Buddhist sites, located on a hill overlooking the valley. Often known as the Monkey Temple, the complex features a magnificent stupa, monasteries, shrines, temples, and traditional Buddhist artwork. The famous Buddha eyes painted on the stupa offer a distinctive symbol of wisdom and compassion while the hilltop location provides beautiful views across Kathmandu Valley.

Patan Durbar Square

Continue to Patan Durbar Square, a remarkable center of Newari art, architecture, and culture in Lalitpur. The square is surrounded by intricately carved temples, courtyards, statues, and historic palace buildings that reflect the craftsmanship of the Malla period. You can explore the traditional brick-paved streets and admire the detailed wood and stone carvings that make Patan one of the valley’s most fascinating cultural destinations.

Pashupatinath Temple

Next, visit Pashupatinath Temple, one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in Nepal and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located on the banks of the Bagmati River, the sacred temple complex is dedicated to Lord Shiva and contains numerous temples, shrines, and traditional structures. Non-Hindu visitors cannot enter the main temple, but they can explore the surrounding complex and observe its religious and cultural significance from designated areas.

Boudhanath Stupa

Finish the sightseeing tour at Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest and most important Buddhist stupas in Nepal. The enormous white dome and golden spire are surrounded by monasteries, prayer wheels, shops, and traditional Buddhist architecture. Walking around the stupa while observing devotees and prayer flags provides a peaceful introduction to Nepal’s rich Tibetan Buddhist culture.

After sightseeing, return to your hotel and use the remaining time to rest and prepare for the Mardi Himal Trek. You can also check your trekking equipment and meet your guide before the journey begins.

The ridge section offers dramatic views into the valleys on either side of the trail, including the Modi Khola Valley and the Mardi Khola and Seti River valleys. Wake up early before sunrise and begin your hike from High Camp toward Mardi Himal Base Camp. The early start allows you to experience the spectacular sunrise over the Himalayan peaks, as the first rays of sunlight illuminate the snow-covered mountains in golden hues.

The trail becomes more demanding as you climb toward the base camp, with steeper and more exposed sections. Weather conditions can change quickly at higher elevations, and strong winds may develop later in the day, so an early start is recommended. Your experienced trekking guide will accompany you throughout the journey, helping you maintain a safe pace and providing assistance whenever needed.

As you reach Mardi Himal Base Camp, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. Take some time to appreciate the dramatic mountain landscape and capture photographs before beginning your return journey.

After exploring the base camp, retrace your route and trek back to High Camp, where you will spend another night at the tea house. This is one of the most rewarding and physically demanding days of the Mardi Himal Trek.

As you descend, the air becomes warmer and the vegetation becomes increasingly lush. Enjoy the changing scenery and occasional views of the surrounding mountains as the trail winds through peaceful forests and local villages. The descent is generally easier than the previous day’s ascent, but the steep sections can still be demanding on the knees, so walk carefully and use trekking poles if needed.

After approximately 5–6 hours of trekking, you will reach Siding Village, a traditional settlement surrounded by green hills and terraced farmland. Check into your local tea house, relax, and reflect on the memorable experiences and Himalayan landscapes you have encountered throughout the trek.

Mardi Himal Trek – Trip Information

The Mardi Himal Trek is an 11-day Himalayan adventure in Nepal’s Annapurna region, combining scenic mountain trails, peaceful villages, rhododendron forests, and spectacular views of Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. The trek is rated easy to moderate and is suitable for travelers with a reasonable level of fitness, with daily walking generally taking around 5–7 hours.

The journey begins in Kathmandu and the trekking section starts from Kande, gradually ascending toward Mardi Himal Base Camp, the highest point of the trek at approximately 4,500 m / 14,764 ft. After completing the trek, you return to Kathmandu. Accommodation includes comfortable 3-star hotels in the cities and tea houses during the trek, while breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided throughout the trekking journey.

The best seasons for the Mardi Himal Trek are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when the weather is generally favorable and mountain visibility is excellent. Transportation is arranged by tourist bus or private vehicle, depending on the package and group requirements. The trek can be organized for 1–12 people, making it suitable for both private trips and small groups. Trekkers also require the necessary Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and TIMS for the route.

Permits Required

Trekkers on the Mardi Himal route need the appropriate Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and TIMS Card. Nepal Tourism Board specifically lists Mardi Himal Trek among the Annapurna routes requiring TIMS, and current TIMS provisions require trekkers on listed routes to be accompanied by a licensed trekking guide and carry an agency-issued TIMS Card.

The Mardi Himal route is not a restricted-area trek, so a separate Restricted Area Trekking Permit from the Department of Immigration is not required. Restricted-area permits apply to designated controlled regions such as Upper Mustang, Manaslu and other listed restricted areas.

Guide Requirement

A licensed trekking guide is required for Mardi Himal Trek under the current TIMS provisions. Booking through a registered trekking agency allows the necessary guide and TIMS arrangements to be handled before the trek.

Altitude and Acclimatization

The trek reaches approximately 4,500 m / 14,764 ft at Mardi Himal Base Camp. Although the itinerary does not involve technical climbing, the significant increase in elevation means trekkers should maintain a comfortable pace, stay hydrated, and follow the guide’s advice regarding altitude. Nepal Tourism Board advises trekkers to be aware of acute mountain sickness (AMS) when traveling above 3,000 m.

Accommodation

Accommodation includes 3-star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara and comfortable tea houses or lodges during the trekking section. Tea houses generally provide basic rooms and shared bathroom facilities, particularly at higher elevations.

Meals

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided during the trekking journey. Meals generally include a combination of Nepali, Tibetan-influenced, Indian, and simple international dishes, depending on the available menu at each stop.

Trekking Experience

The Mardi Himal trail combines forest paths, stone steps, village trails, and exposed mountain ridges. The higher sections toward High Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp are steeper and more demanding, so good walking shoes, appropriate clothing, and basic physical preparation are recommended.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance with high-altitude trekking coverage and emergency evacuation protection is strongly recommended. Because the trek reaches 4,500 m, your insurance should specifically cover trekking at the maximum altitude of your itinerary and emergency helicopter evacuation where applicable.

What Insurance Do I Need?

Travel insurance is strongly recommended for the Mardi Himal Trek. Because the route reaches approximately 4,500 m / 14,764 ft, your insurance should specifically cover high-altitude trekking, medical treatment, emergency evacuation, and helicopter rescue where applicable. Nepal Tourism Board advises trekkers to have comprehensive travel insurance because helicopter rescue and medical treatment in remote mountain areas can be expensive.

Before starting the trek, check that your policy covers the maximum altitude of your itinerary, trekking activities, emergency medical expenses, and evacuation. We also recommend carrying a copy of your insurance policy and emergency contact details during the trek.

For more information about trekking safety and insurance requirements, travelers can refer to the Nepal Tourism Board’s official trekking information.
